A wise man once said, “You don’t know who you are until you know where you come from.” So, who are all these people that have decided to vacation and move to little old Lake County, and why are they coming here rather than other areas with similar interests? Interestingly enough, those coming here are from all walks of life with very diverse interests and backgrounds. There are people coming here from as close as neighboring Mendocino and Sonoma counties for the affordability of housing compared to its neighbors to the West and South. Others are coming from Sacramento and the Bay Area, and some from as far as Southern California. Many Bay Area families have owned summer homes in Lake County for decades and continue to make Lake County their home away from home. Roy Fields, owner of the popular water sports business, On The Waterfront in downtown Lakeport, says with a smile, “I have been in business here for over 20 years, and it is great to see the different generations growing up and coming back to see us year after year. We have several customers who I remember as kids and now they have kids of their own.” Repeat visitors make up only a fraction of those making Lake County their favorite holiday destination.

Word is spreading throughout California, with lengthy articles appearing in the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Sacramento Bee and Press Democrat, all in the past year. Several factors are contributing to the rising popularity of Lake County besides the recreational magnetism. With baby boomers nearing retirement, affordable housing prices, and the real estate boom nation-wide, all signs point to Lake County as a great place to relocate and invest in real estate. A recent survey of the National Association of Home Builders found that almost 70% of retirement-age clients are choosing more amenities over a larger house. With the kids out of the house, the desire to travel and not wanting as big a house to keep clean, retiring baby boomers are purchasing smaller homes with more amenities in desirable locations.
